Stretches to Help Your Feet

If you have a job where standing is done most of the day, it’s beneficial to stretch the tendons and muscles of the feet. Stretching the feet will not only feel good but help reduce any potential swelling the feet may incur, in addition to alleviating any pain that can develop. By wearing shoes and socks that fit comfortably, the chances are favorable that your feet will not feel any discomfort at the end of the day. The following is a stretching exercise the feet may benefit from when practiced regularly. One such exercise is called “split squats,” and this is demonstrated by placing the right leg forward and pulling the left leg backward. This will provide a large distance between the feet. Slowly bend down, and a gentle stretch in the feet can be felt when the back knee touches the floor. It’s suggested to rise slowly, and repeat on the other side. Recent research has suggested that stretching the feet is crucial in maintaining strong arches, muscles, and tendons. Please consider a consultation with a podiatrist for additional information about working on your feet.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Dr. Janet Leicht from New Jersey. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Should My Child Walk Barefoot?

Children typically learn to walk at about 12 months of age. Most babies are born with flat feet, and their feet are extremely flexible because of the excess fat surrounding the numerous bones, muscles, and tendons the foot is comprised of. As walking progresses and the feet get stronger, the condition of flat feet will generally improve. Balance can be learned and improved by encouraging the child to walk barefoot as often as possible. When it’s time to wear shoes, the feet must be measured every few months because of the rapid growth that is experienced. When the length and width of the foot are properly measured and the correct size is determined, the shoes that are worn should fit firmly and comfortably. It is important to be aware of your child’s feet, which will aid in noticing if any foot conditions are present. Some of these may include any pain being experienced while waking, painful toenails which may be indicative of an ingrown toenail, or any stiffness in the feet. Please consider scheduling a consultation with a podiatrist if you have questions about how your child’s feet are developing.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Janet Leicht of New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

How to Care For Elderly Feet

One of the best things we can do for our feet is choose shoes that fit comfortably. Recent research has shown that our feet get wider as we age, so it’s suggested to have the feet measured frequently. Additionally, it’s beneficial to avoid wearing high heels and shoes that fit tightly. Shoes may fit differently because the skin on the feet may lose elasticity and the nails may become brittle. It’s important to stay as active as possible to help poor circulation, which is a common ailment among seniors. Athlete’s foot is commonplace among the elderly population and can cause considerable discomfort. Simple preventative measures include keeping the skin clean and drying thoroughly in between the toes, which is especially helpful. Diabetic patients need to be very aware of any sores that may appear. Consider scheduling a consultation with a podiatrist for correct treatment options on how to care for your feet.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Janet Leicht from New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Causes and Treatment Options for Bunions

If you have a growth on the bottom of the big toe that appears to be of a bony consistency, you may have what is referred to as a bunion. Symptoms of this condition may consist of pain and swelling around the big toe, in addition to the area feeling sore, and appearing red. They are often caused by a predisposed inherited gene. Additionally, choosing to wear shoes that fit poorly may be another possible cause of bunions. This condition may be more prevalent in women than men because of the type of shoes that are worn. This may occur if high heels are worn frequently, causing the toes to be cramped into a small area, which eventually may change the structure of the foot. Treatment options may include using bunion pads which will cushion the affected area, and may possibly eliminate any discomfort. A consultation with a podiatrist may be considered to discuss proper treatment techniques which may include surgery.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Dr. Janet Leicht of New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Podiatrists often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your provider.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery
